Basil

Description

Basil is an herb, and the species is most commonly the sweet basil Ocimum basilicum  of the family Lamiaceae (mints).  Basil, originally from India, is best known as a culinary herb prominently featured in Italian cuisine, and also plays a major role in the Northeast Asian cuisine of Taiwan and the Southeast Asian cuisines of Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.  Basil grows between 30–130 cm tall, with opposite, light green, silky leaves 3–11 cm long and 1–6 cm broad.

Dried basil smells and taste quite different from its fresh state.  It can be added to a variety of dishes and recipes including grits, tomato sauce, meat sauce, oxtails, croutons, pork tenderloin, and much more.
